Two seriously injured after car overturns into water on A31 near Zweins

A car carrying five people overturned and ended up in the water on the A31 near Zweins, in the municipality of Waadhoeke, around 12:00 p.m. Friday, leaving two occupants with life-threatening injuries, police said.

According to AD, the vehicle landed upside down in the water. Emergency services dispatched a trauma helicopter to the scene. A police spokesperson confirmed that two passengers sustained “very serious injuries.” The remaining three occupants were checked by ambulance personnel on-site.

Traffic on the A31 between Dronrijp and Franeker was temporarily closed in both directions. The lane toward Leeuwarden has since reopened, while the route toward Harlingen remains closed, Rijkswaterstaat reported. Authorities expect the road to reopen toward Harlingen around 4:00 p.m.

During the resulting traffic congestion, a public bus became stuck in the outer shoulder.
