Three hurt, one arrested after tram derails in Uithoorn following car crash
Early Saturday morning, a 22-year-old man from Amsterdam was arrested after his car collided with a tram in Uithoorn, leaving three people injured and causing significant damage to the tram line, AT5 reports.
The accident occurred just after 6:00 a.m. on the Randweg when the car drove through closed railroad barriers and onto the tracks.
A tram, line 25, struck the vehicle, causing it to derail and breaking the overhead electric lines. Witnesses in the area reported hearing a loud bang at the moment of impact.
The three injured include the tram driver, a passenger on the tram, and the car driver.
Multiple emergency services responded to the scene, including several ambulances, fire trucks, and a mobile medical trauma team.
Police confirmed the arrest of the 22-year-old Amsterdam resident, who is suspected of causing the collision.
Photos from the scene show the charging cable of the electric vehicle still attached to the car, though the reason for this remains unclear. A police spokesperson said there is no additional information available at this time.
The collision has disrupted tram service between Westwijk and Uithoorn Centrum.
Repairs to the overhead cables are expected to last throughout the weekend, according to GVB, which has arranged for buses to serve the affected route in the meantime.
Tram line 25, connecting Uithoorn with Station Zuid, opened in July 2024 and is considered a relatively new addition to the area’s public transit network.
