Identity of teen girl's suspected killer still not confirmed months after arrest

Three months after 17-year-old Lisa’s brutal murder in Amsterdam, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) has still been unable to confirm the suspect’s identity. The man, arrested shortly after the teen girl’s murder, told the police who he is. But he has no documents confirming his identity, and the OM has not yet been able to verify it, a spokesperson told NU.nl.

The OM has submitted requests for information about the man to several countries, as well as a request for legal assistance to Nigeria, where the man claims to be from. It is taking some time for responses from these countries to come in, the OM spokesperson said.

“The OM is dependent on the civil status records of other countries,” the spokesperson told the newspaper. “That process takes time, and the OM is still waiting for a response. Not all countries have the same civil status records as the Netherlands.”

The suspect will appear in court for a preliminary hearing on November 25. According to the OM, the fact that his identity hasn’t been verified will not hinder his prosecution.

Lisa was found murdered near Holterbergweg in Amsterdam during the early hours of August 21. The police arrested the suspect at a nearby asylum shelter the next day. He is also suspected of raping and attempting to sexually assault two other women in the two weeks before Lisa’s murder.
