Dutch authorities still struggling to identify suspect in teen girl's murder
The Dutch authorities still haven’t been able to confirm “with 100 percent certainty” the identity of the man suspected of killing 17-year-old Lisa from Abcoude in Duivendrecht and sexually attacking two women in Amsterdam last month, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) said on Monday.
The man himself says he is from Nigeria, and that corresponds with information he gave in his asylum application, the OM said. But he doesn’t have any identity documents to confirm that. The OM previously said they believe the man to be 22 years old.
The OM has asked several countries, including Nigeria, for further information. The authorities also checked the suspect’s DNA and fingerprints against Dutch and European databases, but came up with nothing.
Lisa was stabbed to death on Holterbergweg in Duivendrecht during the early hours of August 20 as she was cycling home from a night out in Amsterdam with friends. The police arrested the suspect for her murder on August 22.
The man was already in custody, having been arrested the day before for raping a woman on Weesperzijde in Amsterdam on August 15. He has also been linked to an attempt to sexually attack another woman in Amsterdam on August 13.
The OM also said that the police received around 300 reports since the authorities held a press conference about this case on August 22. “Processing and verifying these reports will take considerable time,” the OM said. “For investigative reasons, no information can yet be released regarding the nature of the reports.”
The court remanded the man into pre-trial custody for another 90 days on Monday. The investigation is ongoing. The man is still in restricted custody, which means that he is only allowed to have contact with his lawyers and investigators.
