Teen girl found dead in Amsterdam park near Johan Cruijff Arena; Murder suspected
Foul play is suspected in the death of a teenaged girl whose body was found Wednesday morning in an area near the Johan Cruijff Arena and the Ziggo Dome. The dead victim, a 17-year-old girl from Abcoude, was found outdoors at about 4 a.m. near Holterbergweg in Amsterdam-Duivendrecht, a suburban area between Amsterdam’s Oost and Zuidoost districts.
“Based on the initial investigation, it appears that the girl was killed as the result of a crime,” police wrote in a statement. “It has not yet been determined what exactly happened to the girl, and the investigation team is considering various scenarios.”
No arrests were made in the hours after the body was found early Wednesday morning. Though a large-scale murder investigation was underway, police have yet to release descriptions of possible suspects and persons of interest.
Her body was found near a watery area close to the De Toekomst sports facility. The location of the initial investigation was a cycling path that connects the Amsterdam UMC teaching hospital, Duivendrecht, the Zuidoost district, and Abcoude. The village is about six kilometers in the municipality of De Ronde Venen in provincial Utrecht.
The area was immediately treated as a crime scene, police said. Officers also searched the area around Holterbergweg for a suspect with support from a police helicopter, but they were unsuccessful, the police said. Specialized units, including forensics investigators and sniffer dogs, arrived to conduct research.
The site of the investigation was cordoned off while detectives continued their work. The police are urging any witnesses to come forward.
