Violence in supermarkets: Employee stabbed in Rotterdam, customer assaulted in Amsterdam

Two people were injured in separate violent incidents in Dutch supermarkets this week. A supermarket worker got stabbed in an Albert Heijn in Rotterdam. And a man was beaten up in a supermarket in Amsterdam after confronting another man for cutting in line. He was seriously injured.

The incident in Rotterdam happened in the Albert Heijn on Krabbendijkestraat at around 7:40 p.m. on Thursday, the Rotterdam police said. The victim was working when a man came up and stabbed him.

The supermarket employee was taken to a hospital for treatment. He was conscious and able to communicate with first responders, the police said.

The victim’s colleagues overpowered the suspect and held him until the police arrested him.

The Amsterdam incident happened at around 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday in a supermarket on Bos en Lommerplein, the police said. One man confronted another for cutting in line at the checkout. The suspect punched the other customer so hard that he fell to the ground and was seriously injured.

The 53-year-old victim was unresponsive after the blow. Emergency services took him to a hospital.

The suspect had fled the scene by the time the police arrived at the supermarket. The police are investigating.

On Monday, there was another violent incident just outside a Jumbo supermarket in Capelle aan den IJssel. A 12-year-old girl was stabbed. The police arrested two teenagers, one of whom is still in custody.
