Three children seriously injured in car and van collision near German border
Three children were seriously injured Sunday afternoon in a collision between a passenger car and an oldtimer van near the Dutch-German border in Aalten, Gelderland, according to police.
The crash occurred on the Hamelandroute, a road near the border crossing. The children were in the back seat of the passenger car when the accident took place. They were transported to a hospital by ambulance. A police spokesperson confirmed to NU.nl, following earlier reports by Omroep Gelderland, that their injuries were “serious enough to require hospital care.”
Two adults who were also in the car were not injured. The driver of the van, a German national, was unharmed as well.
Emergency services responded in force. Multiple ambulances and a trauma helicopter were dispatched to the scene. The crash caused significant damage. According to regional broadcaster Omroep Gelderland, the passenger car ended up in a residential garden. Police could not confirm that detail.
Authorities have closed the road to all traffic while investigating the cause of the crash. A police spokesperson said that one vehicle may have failed to yield the right of way: “It may have been a right-of-way issue.”
