Police officer killed, colleague seriously injured in Lieren crash with a truck
A police employee was killed and another was seriously injured Friday afternoon when the car they were traveling in was struck by a truck with a trailer in Lieren, the police said. The two officers were driving a civilian vehicle at the time of the crash, Omroep Gelderland reported.
The collision happened at about 1:45 p.m. on Kanaal Zuid in Lieren. A car entering Kanaal Zuid from the Veendijk was hit on its side by the truck. The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation.
One of the occupants died at the scene. The other was rushed to a hospital by ambulance with serious injuries. A trauma helicopter landed nearby to provide medical assistance.
Authorities are asking witnesses to come forward, including an older man who may have seen the collision and could have important information for the investigation.
The man is believed to be about 70 years old, with gray hair, a slim build, a light complexion, and a height of about 1.65 to 1.70 meters. At the time of the crash, he was wearing a helmet, black short cycling shorts, and a fluorescent yellow shirt. He was riding a regular bicycle.
