Murder suspect wanted in Austria for killing ex-partner arrested in Utrecht

A 32-year-old Hungarian man suspected of murdering his ex-partner in Austria was arrested Thursday morning in the Utrecht neighborhood of Lunetten, following an international manhunt, AD reports. The arrest took place around 8:50 a.m. outside a supermarket, according to Dutch authorities.

The suspect, identified as Krisztián P., is accused of fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend, a German woman named Jennifer, in the early hours of Saturday, May 3, in the Austrian town of Maria Alm, located near Salzburg. The shooting occurred at approximately 00:40 a.m. during a meeting the two had arranged in a parking lot near a supermarket to discuss past conflicts.

According to Austrian media, Jennifer brought a female friend along for support. That friend witnessed the shooting, during which Jennifer was shot in the head. She died shortly after the incident.

Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene in a rented silver Skoda Octavia. He later traveled by train to the Netherlands, eventually arriving in Utrecht.

A large-scale international search was launched. Austrian authorities issued a European arrest warrant and released the suspect’s photo to the public. Investigators were able to trace him to the Netherlands by Tuesday, prompting coordination with Dutch police and the Austrian authorities.

On Thursday, a Dutch special intervention police unit moved in and arrested the suspect outside a supermarket in Lunetten. The arrest was made without incident.

Authorities revealed that the victim and the suspect had been in a relationship until the summer of 2024. After their breakup, Jennifer reportedly received threatening messages from the man. She filed a police report in December. According to Austrian media, she also accused him of vandalizing her property.

Krisztián P. is expected to appear before the examining chamber of the court in Amsterdam, which will decide whether he will be extradited to Austria to stand trial.
