Explosion reported near Drents museum in Assen

An explosion occurred early Saturday morning at the Drents Museum in Assen, potentially linked to a burglary attempt. Authorities have not confirmed whether any items were stolen. The museum will be closed all weekend.

The blast happened at approximately 3:45 a.m., damaging several buildings along the Brink, including shattered windows. Police have not yet arrested any suspects and are urging witnesses to come forward.

Officers conducted a search of the area following the explosion, collecting evidence and looking for leads. It remains unclear whether a single individual or multiple people were involved in the incident.

Ancient gold

The Drents Museum is currently hosting a major archaeological exhibition titled Dacia - Rijk van goud en zilver (Dacia - Realm of Gold and Silver). The display features more than 50 gold and silver treasures from the ancient kingdom of Dacia, located in present-day Romania, dating from the 20th century BCE to the 3rd century CE.

Police have not indicated whether the artifacts on display were targeted during the suspected burglary attempt. Authorities continue to investigate and have called on anyone with information to assist in identifying those responsible.
