4 Dutch family members missing after Lake Malawi boat crossing

Authorities in Malawi are searching for four Dutch family members who went missing during a boat crossing of Lake Malawi on the border with Tanzania. The three crew members of the vessel are also missing, according to the Malawian news site Nyasa Times.

The group departed Sunday from Mbamba Bay in Tanzania on a speedboat for a journey of more than 60 kilometers to Nkhata Bay in Malawi. When the boat failed to arrive at the expected time, an alert was issued. Nothing has been heard from the vessel since its departure.

Multiple search teams have been deployed, but nothing has been located so far, according to Nyasa Times. An assistant ship inspector based in Nkhata Bay believes the boat may have suffered a mechanical failure.

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is aware of the situation. A ministry spokesperson said consular assistance is being provided to the family, and Dutch embassy staff in the region are in contact with local authorities.

Officials have issued an urgent appeal to fishermen, boat owners, and residents living along the shores of the lake to watch for the boat and its occupants.
