Downpours cause flooded roads in Breda, Groningen; More showers expected today
Heavy downpours caused flooding and other problems in various places in the Netherlands last night. Streets flooded, and cars crashed into shifted manhole covers in Breda. Downpours also caused flooded roads and problems in Groningen. The KNMI expects more rain on Wednesday, but did not issue any weather warnings.
In Breda, a car crashed into a lamppost after colliding with a manhole cover that moved due to the high water level. Another car had all its airbags go off, and a third suffered flat tires, Omroep Brabant reported. Another motorist got stuck under a flooded railway viaduct, and firefighters had to rescue them.
In Groningen, police officers got stuck when they tried to drive through a flooded road under a viaduct. A car ended up in a ditch on the N46 near the village of Sint Annen. Emergency services responded in large numbers. It is unclear whether anyone got hurt, NOS reported.
The KNMI issued code orange and yellow warnings for the thunderstorms that moved across the country on Tuesday evening and overnight. The meteorological institute warned of possible flooding due to downpours, strong winds, and hail.
L1 Nieuws reported large hail stones in Landgraaf and Kerkrade. Heerlen and the surrounding area got hail with a diameter of around 2 centimeters. The village of Blitterswijck got around 30 millimeters of rain in half an hour, completely overwhelming the brand-new sewer intended specifically to drain rainwater.
For Wednesday, the KNMI expects rain and scattered thunderstorms, especially in the north and east of the country. Some areas may get a lot of rain, though the meteorological institute did not issue any warnings. Maximums will range between 21 degrees on the coast and up to 27 degrees in some places in the east. The day will be mostly cloudy, but the sun may show its face occasionally.
Thursday will start cloudy, with more room for sunshine in the afternoon. No rain is expected. Maximums will again range between 21 and 27 degrees, with a moderate to strong southwesterly wind.
