Another hot and humid day, ending in thunderstorms

The Netherlands is in for another hot and humid day, especially in the east. Maximums there could reach 34 degrees Celsius. Thunderstorms will enter the country from the east tonight.

The KNMI issued a code yellow warning for heat in the provinces of Limburg, Gelderland, Overijssel, Drenthe, and Groningen. The warning is in place from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The heat, combined with the high humidity, can feel oppressive, the KNMI warned. “People with vulnerable health can get complaints like overheating and dehydration. During heavy exertion, anyone can get these complaints.” Drink enough water, seek shade, and avoid physical activities during the heat of the day.

The KNMI also issues a code yellow warning for thunderstorms, starting in Limburg, Overijssel, Drenthe, and Groningen at 7:00 p.m. and spreading to the rest of the county overnight. The storms may include strong winds, heavy downpours, and hail, the meteorological institute warned.

Tuesday will be predominantly sunny and hot, with maximums ranging from 25 degrees on the coast to 34 degrees in the east. The wind will be weak to moderate and from various directions.

Overnight, rain and thunderstorms will cool things down a bit, but it will still be a warm night. Minimums will range between 17 degrees in the west and up to 21 degrease in the northeast.

Wednesday will be gloomy and considerably cooler than the past two days. Rain and thunderstorms are possible in some places, and maximums will range between 21 degrees along the coast and 26 degrees on the eastern border.

Hottest day of the year

Monday was the hottest day of the year so far. The national weather station in De Bilt measured a maximum of 30.9 degrees Celsius. Westdorpe recorded the highest temperature at 34.0 degrees. The humidity made the day oppressively hot.

Many Netherlands residents sought coolness in the ocean and the beaches quickly filled with people. Recreational lakes were also popular. In Weert, people had to wait up to half an hour to get into the Blauwe Meertje, NOS reports. Some sought the shade in the woods. “It is lovely here. Maybe 10 degrees cooler,” a hiker in the forests at Westerschouwen told Omroep Zeeland.

In Papendrecht, the fire department opened their hoses for an impromptu water festival. A few hundred children and parents came to cool down in the spray.
