Hot day to end in thunderstorms; Temps up to 31, code yellow warning this evening

The Netherlands is in for a beautiful summer day, with lots of sunshine and temperatures up to 31 degrees in Limburg, according to the KNMI. But the day will end in thunderstorms, bringing with them lightning, hail, downpours, and strong winds up to 100 kilometers per hour. The meteorological institute issued a code yellow warning for the entire country, starting in the southwest at 5:00 p.m.

Tuesday morning and afternoon will have long periods of sunshine interspersed with some clouds. The easterly wind will be weak to moderate, and maximums will climb from around 20 degrees on the Wadden Islands to 31 degrees in Limburg. The northern parts of the country will also hit summer temperatures between 25 and 27 degrees.

“It will be a lovely day,” Magdel Erasmus of Buienradar told RTL Nieuws. She expects crowded beaches today. “But I would recommend getting there early so that you can go home early, too.” Because from around 5:00 p.m., heavy thunderstorms will enter the Netherlands from the southwest, hitting Zeeland first.

The KNMI’s code yellow warning warns of strong winds with gusts up to 100 kilometers per hour, hail stones up to 4 centimeters, and between 20 and 40 millimeters of rain falling in a short period. “Lightning strikes, flooding, blown over objects and trees, and large hailstones can cause damage and nuisance,” the KNMI said. “These thunderstorms can be especially dangerous for outdoor activities.”

The code yellow warning takes effect in Zeeland, Zuid-Holland, and Noord-Brabant at 5:00 p.m. and then moves northeast across the country, arriving last in Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe, and Overijssel at 9:00 p.m. The worst of the weather should be over by 1:00 a.m. as the storms move into Germany.
