Northern Lights could be visible over the Netherlands tonight and tomorrow

A series of solar flares headed towards Earth means there is a good chance that the Northern Lights will be visible this weekend. Depending on weather conditions, the brightest moments when aurora borealis will become visible will start Friday evening and continue into Saturday morning, according to Weerplaza.

Particles from the first solar flare will probably arrive between 8 p.m. on Friday and 5 a.m. on Saturday. One or two powerful bursts are also expected during the overnight hours from Saturday to Sunday.

However, the long days mean there are only narrow windows in which the Northern Lights can be seen in Netherlands. If the solar flares reach Earth after 3 a.m., it may already be too late as it begins to get lighter, Weerplaza said. Sunrise will take place at 5:09 a.m.

The weather conditions do seem to be quite favorable in many places. Low cloud covers or fog is only likely to occur in some coastal areas, but according to the weather website, this is "an uncertain factor and also quite local in nature."

Only from Sunday evening onwards does the chance of an occasional shower increase. Until then, the conditions for seeing the Northern Lights are quite favorable.
