Photos: Northern Lights visible to naked eye in Netherlands last night

Last night, the Northern Lights were again visible to the naked eye in the Netherlands. People throughout the country posted photos of the phenomenon on social media.

The skies were clear in Groningen, Friesland, Drenthe, Overijssel, and Gelderland, so people there especially got a show. But even people in the cloudy west also spotted the colorful lights between the cloud fields.

The phenomenon, also called the Aurora Borealis, is caused by solar storms on the sun sending electrically charged particles toward the Earth. When these particles collide with the oxygen and nitrogen particles in the Earth’s atmosphere, they're visible as colors, usually green and pink.

The sun is currently very active and there are many solar storms. As a result, the Northern Lights have been visible in the Netherlands many times in the past year.
