Video: Intense lightning storm hits overnight, Up to 27° and hail today
An intense lightning storm moved over the Netherlands overnight. Loud thunder and bright lightning bolts woke people across the country in the early morning hours. Some places also had torrents of rain. The storms are over for now and the Netherlands can look forward to a warm, partially sunny day. The southeast of the country may see more storms with hail this evening.
Videos of lightning and peals of thunder are all over social media on Wednesday morning. An Amsterdam local said that the storm woke him at around 3:30 a.m. A Hague resident said she got startled awake at around 5:45 a.m. “I just heard the most bizarre loudest thunderclap of my life, holy shit,” she wrote on X.
According to the meteorological institute KNMI, Wednesday will be mostly dry now that the thunderstorms are over. The sun will break through in more and more places as the day progresses. Afternoon temperatures will climb to between 20 degrees Celsius on the coast and 27 degrees in the east of the country, with a moderate northeasterly wind.
This evening will be partly cloudy. There is a chance of more thunderstorms in the southeast. “Hail and strong winds could occur,” the meteorological institute said. The wind will blow from the east and will be moderate in most places, but strong in the northern coastal area.
Thursday will look much the same, with periods of sun and maximums between 20 and 26 degrees. The southern half of the country will see some showers or thunderstorms, possibly with hail and strong gusts, in the evening.
Friday will be cloudy with occasional rain and temperatures around the climate average (16.3 degrees). “More sun and gradually rising temperatures from the weekend. However, there remains a chance of occasional showers,” the KNMI said.
