Storm warning escalated to Code Orange: Downpours, hail, 100 km/h gusts tonight
The KNMI escalated its thunderstorms warning for Tuesday evening to Code Orange. “The thunderstorms may be accompanied by heavy wind gusts of approximately 75-100 kilometers per hour, hail of 2-4 centimeters, and a lot of rain in a short time (20-40 mm).” That can cause injuries, flooding, and damage, the meteorological institute said, urging Netherlands residents to be prepared.
The thunderstorms will enter the Netherlands in the southwest, hitting Zeeland first at around 4 p.m. The large storm will continue northeast during the evening, arriving in Groningen at around 8 p.m. They will eventually blow over the whole country before exiting towards the eastern border with Germany and over the Wadden Sea at the end of the night and into Wednesday morning. The KNMI expects the worst weather to be finished around midnight.
A Code Orange warning for thunderstorms means that the KNMI is concerned about life-threatening situations caused by lightning strikes, strong winds, large hail stones, and flooding. “These storms can be especially dangerous for outdoor activities and traffic, the KNMI said.
More stormy weather is predicted for Wednesday at about 3 a.m., but less severe, according to Buienradar. This will also begin in Zeeland, moving towards the northeast until it finishes up by 10 a.m. The heaviest rainfall is expected by 6 a.m.
Avoid open water and open areas during the storm. Those caught outside in the storm should not use an umbrella, and should not seek shelter under trees. They should also stay away from high points due to lightning strikes. To prevent damage, loose items like garden furniture and waste containers can be secured or brought indoors. Electricity plugs should be pulled from the socket, and basement doors should be keptclosed when possible.
Drivers caught on the road when the storm hits are advised to reduce their speed and keep a safe following distance. Expect longer traveling time and keep an eye on Rijkswaterstaat or ANWB for current traffic information, and for updates about the situation on the roads.
