Body found in Amsterdam-Oost confirmed as missing 57-year-old man

Police confirmed that a body pulled from the water in Amsterdam-Oost over the weekend was a 57-year-old Amsterdam man. He was last seen on Thursday evening in security camera footage near the Brazilie shopping center. His body was found on Saturday afternoon in the IJhaven, the waterway that runs along the shopping center.

"The investigation has shown that he did not die as a result of a crime, but that it was a fatal accident," police stated over the weekend. It was not immediately clear how the man wound up in the water, but Storm Pia brought strong gusts of wind on the day the man disappeared. The wind was strong enough to knock truck trailers over, and topple trees, one of which fell on a bicyclist and killed her.

Investigators had spent two days searching for the missing man, whose name was not released. The underwater search team used sniffer dogs and a sonar boat as part of their efforts. A forensic investigation determined that the body was the missing man's, police said.

"The man’s family was notified of his death. We wish them and other loved ones a lot of strength with this loss," police added.

It was the second time in a matter of weeks that a missing person was found dead in the waters off Veemkade. In October, police found the body of 29-year-old Sam van Grondelle in the IJhaven a few days after he went missing.

Additionally, 22-year-old Abdulamin Mansouri disappeared on December 9 while on his way towards the Jean Desmetstraat on IJburg. He was last seen wearing a dark blue or black jacket, and grey and orange Adidas Yeeze shoes, police said.
