Icy roads trigger code orange warning; No trains between Rotterdam, Gouda

On Thursday, icy roads can cause dangerous driving conditions in the north and center of the Netherlands. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code orange warning lasting until Thursday evening.

The code orange warning affects all provinces except Zeeland, Noord-Brabant, Limburg, and the Wadden Islands.

"Danger of slippery roads. Major risks for road users. Adjust your driving and travel behavior. Take longer travel times on the road and public transport into account. Follow weather reports and warnings," the meteorological institute said.

The weather isn't the only thing affecting public transport on Thursday. No trains are running between Gouda and Rotterdam Central Station until at least 8:30 a.m. due to a defective overhead line. The NS, therefore, deployed express buses.

There are also problems elsewhere. Due to a faulty catenary, fewer intercity trains will will run between Utrecht Central and Amersfoort Central until at least 5:00 a.m. on Friday morning. There are also problems between Arnhem Central and Doetinchem on Thursday morning due to a signal failure. It is not yet clear how long this will last.

The day will be increasingly cloudy, with occasional light rain in the northern half of the Netherlands, according to the KNMI. In the evening, there will be rain in more and more places and the northern parts may see some fogs.

Maximum temperatures will be reached towards the end of the evening and range from 5 degrees Celsius in the far northeast and 10 degrees along the coast. The wind will be southerly and moderate, quite strong on the coast and IJsselmeer.
