Snow: Fewer issues on the tracks; Only 66 flights canceled at Schiphol so far
The Netherlands is in for another cold and icy day, but snow is causing far fewer issues than in the past few days. NS is running its winter timetable largely on schedule. Schiphol reported only 66 cancellations by 7:20 a.m. Motorists are still warned to beware of icy roads, but so far, the traffic services have not reported any major issues on the roads.
An NS spokesperson told ANP that no trains are running on the high-speed line between Rotterdam Central Station and Breda because of track works that are taking longer than expected. There are also still some switch issues around Lelystad, but that won’t significantly impact train traffic, the spokesperson said.
NS is running its winter timetable, which means fewer trains than usual. “Please allow for longer travel times, more frequent transfers, and crowded trains,” the rail company said. “Plan your trip shortly before departure for the most up-to-date travel information.”
Schiphol did not expect any precautionary weather-related cancellations on Thursday, but warned that the weather might still impact the flight schedule. “Travelers should also expect possible delays on Thursday.”
At 7:20 a.m., the airport listed six canceled and two delayed departures on its website. Arriving flights were more affected by the weather, with 60 canceled and 48 delayed.
The KNMI has a code yellow warning for icy roads and sidewalks in place for the entire country. “Slippery conditions are expected on local roads due to previously fallen snow. There’s also a chance of slippery conditions on the highways early this morning due to freezing,” the KNMI said.
The meteorological institute forecast little snow in the Netherlands on Thursday. “The chance of a few centimeters of snow will increase from the northeast during Friday afternoon and evening,” the KNMI said. The icy roads warning will remain in place until at least Saturday.
