Hundreds commemorate footballer stabbed to death in The Hague
Hundreds of people gathered at football club HVV Laakkwartier in The Hague on Wednesday to say goodbye to Bilal Aydin, a 20-year-old footballer who was stabbed to death in the city on Saturday. The club's main field was completely crowded with loved ones who came to show their respects, AD reports.
Aydin's body was carried onto the field. After a prayer and speeches by the footballer's brother and a representative from the Turkish consulate, among others, the attendees silently marched to the intersection of Goudriaankade and Rijswijk, where Aydin was killed. The intersection was covered in flowers and messages.
The footballer for HVV Laakkwartier's first team was stabbed to death at around 6:45 p.m. on Saturday. Exactly what happened, is not yet clear. Investigators believe Aydin was trying to appease an argument involving a relative when he was attacked, according to AD. Four men, three 19-year-olds from The Hague and a 28-year-old from Zoetermeer, were arrested. They are still in custody.
Aydin's body will be taken to Turkey, where he will be buried.
