Seven killed in weekend accidents; two kids in critical condition
Traffic accidents throughout the Netherlands cost the lives of seven people over the weekend. Two children, both age 7, are in critical condition after being thrown from a car during an accident on the A50 near Ravenstein on Sunday evening.
The accident on the A50 happened at around 9:00 p.m. on Sunday between Ravenstein and Heesch. The car, carrying two adults and two kids, went off the road for unknown reasons, according to RTL Nieuws. It hit a tree and rolled multiple times, eventually ending up in a ditch. The victims were taken to hospital. The kids were in critical condition, the adults sustained less serious injuries.
An accident possibly involving a wrong-way driver, left a woman dead and multiple injured on the A16 near Maasvlakte in Rotterdam on Sunday night, the Rotterdam police said on Twitter. The deceased woman collided head-on with another motorist, who had to be freed from the car by emergency services. A third motorist involved in the collision could escape their car under their own power. A number of other vehicles were also damaged.
A motorcyclist was found dead on the intersection between Molendijk, Oudedijk and Oostdijk in Kortgene at around 2:20 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. According to the police, the victim was lying at the scene for some time before being found. The police suspect that the motorcyclist was involved in a one-sided accident, a spokesperson said to NU.nl.
On Saturday morning, three people were killed in an accident on the N272 in Handel, Noord-Brabant. The accident happened at around 7:15 a.m. and involved three vehicles. A police spokesperson told Omroep Brabant that it looks like one of the cars ended up on the wrong side of the street, where two oncoming vehicles collided with it. A 31-year-old man from Erp and a couple from Helmond, aged 55 and 59 years, were killed. The third car contained a 27-year-old woman and a 15-year-old girl from Helmond. They were injured. "But their injuries don't seem to be serious", the police spokesperson said.
A 42-year-old man from Twello died after being hit by a car on Haaksbergseweg in Neede at around 2:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. A 44-year-old man from Enschede was driving his car from Neede towards Haaksbergen, and collided with the pedestrian. The Twello man died at the scene. He was walking in the road when he was hit, a police spokesperson said to De Stentor. "This accident is a strange case." Why the man was on the road, is still under investigation.
A 25-year-old man from De Lier died during the early hours of Saturday morning in an accident in his hometown. He was riding his scooter on Zijtwende when he ended up in the water for unknown reasons, the police said in a statement. A passerby found him in the water. Emergency services tried to resuscitate him, but it was to no avail. The police are investigating.
