Arson suspected in Veluwe wildfire; suspect arrested

The police and fire department suspect that a large wildfire on the Veluwe in Epe on Monday was deliberately lit. Some 100 by 200 meters of heather burned down. A suspect was arrested after a short search. "We had a good description", a spokesperson for the police said to Omroep Gelderland.

The fire department responded to the scene shortly before 4:45 p.m. after reports of fires starting in multiple places. The fire spread fast, quickly covering 100 by 200 meters of heather. Firefighters managed to stop the fire spreading to the nearby forest. Around 6:30 p.m. the fire was under control, though actually extinguishing it took hours yet.

The suspect is in custody for questioning.
