Matrix signs investigated after week of fatal accidents; 9 killed

Dutch public works department Rijkswaterstaat is investigating whether there is a connection between three fatal accidents this past week, in which a total of nine people were killed. In all three cases, the cars collided with so-called matrix signs. Rijkswaterstaat will investigate whether these road signs played a role in the cause of the accidents, AD reports.

On Easter Monday, four friends from Apeldoorn were killed after their car hit a matrix sign on the A1 highway. That same day a 19-year-old woman from Deventer crashed into a matrix sign, and passed away. On Wednesday morning, four young men died after their car hit a matrix sign on the A12 in The Hague.

That amounts to three serious accidents in less than a week, with a total of nine fatalities.

Rijkswaterstaat is now investigating whether there is a connection between these accidents. "Is there a pattern? Do we have to adjust things? That will become clear after research from our experts", a spokesperson told newspaper AD.
