Shooting suspect jumps out of moving car in police chase

Shots were fired at a home in Helmond, injuring the resident, early on Thursday morning. While the police were chasing the suspected perpetrators, one of the suspects jumped out of the moving car. He was "very seriously injured", the Oost-Brabant police said on Twitter.

The shooting happened on Zeppelinstraat in Helmond at around 4:00 a.m., RTL Nieuws reports. The resident was hit in his lower leg. He was taken to hospital. A woman and a young child were also in the home during the shooting. They were not hurt.

A short time later the police noticed a car in the Rijpelberg neighborhood in Helmond. As the officers believed the perpetrators of the shooting were in the car, they ordered the car to stop. The driver ignored the stop signal and sped off. The police gave chase.

During the chase the police tapped the vehicle with their car multiple times, "but that also had no effect", the police said on Twitter. On Energiestraat in Deurne the passenger jumped out of the moving car. The man was very seriously injured. He was taken to hospital by helicopter.

The suspects' car was found on Zeilbergsestraat. The police searched the area for the other suspect, also using sniffer dogs, but nothing was found.

The motive for the shooting is not yet known. The police are investigating.
