Ex gets 12 years for killing nurse at Waalwijk hospital

The court of appeal in Den Bosch sentenced John F. to 12 years in prison for killing his ex-girlfriend Linda van der Giesen. In 2015 F. shot and killed Van der Giesen in the parking lot of a hospital in Waalwijk, where she worked as a nurse. He also threatened and stalked her for some time before her murder.

When this case was first tried, F. was sentenced to 10 years in prison. He appealed, but earlier this month said that he changed his mind, NU.nl reports. The court then decided to continue with the appeal, as the case had already started.

The court in Den Bosch took into consideration that Van der Giesen's family, including her son, suffered a great loss. "The court also weighs in the fact that the man was convicted of violent crimes before", the court said.

Psychiatric examination showed that the man suffers from "serious personality problems". The Den Bosch court therefore also sentenced him to mandatory institutionalized psychiatric treatment. The sentence is equal to what the Public Prosecutor demanded.

Van der Giesen reported F. to the police multiple times before her murder. The last time was two days before she was killed. After an investigation by a committee, the police admitted that they should have taken earlier action.
