Traffic controller found dead after attempt to rescue motorist from river

The police found the body of a missing traffic controller in the Hollandse Ijssel near Capelle aan den IJssel during the early hours of Tuesday morning. The 51-year-old man from Rotterdam disappeared around 2:00 p.m. on Monday after he tried to rescue a motorist who crashed into the river, NU.nl reports.

A car drove off the embankment on Groenedijk on Monday afternoon and ended up in the river. The traffic controller, who was at the scene due to roadworks, immediately went into the water to try and save the motorist. But he disappeared.

The motorist, a 75-year-old woman from Capelle, died in the accident.

The police searched for the man using sonar equipment. His body was found at around 00:45 a.m. on Tuesday.
