Nearly €264,000 raised for victims of Oss railway crash

A massive 263,955 euros was raised in a fundraising action for the victims and relatives of a fatal railway accident in Oss last week. That is over 200 thousand euros more than initiator Nick Nietveld from Almere had hoped for, ANP reports.

Nietveld started the fundraiser last week Friday, the day after the accident, with the hope to raise 60 thousand euros. That amount was surpassed in less than a day. The Almere man is delighted. "I did not expect this. It gives me goose bumps. It's great that people sympathize like that", he said to the news wire. The fundraiser was closed at noon today.

A childminder was taking five children to primary school on a Stint electric cargo bike in Oss last week Thursday, when they were hit by a train at a railway crossing on Braakstraat. Four children aged 4, 4, 6 and 8 years, were killed. An 11-year-old girl and the 32-year-old woman were seriously injured.

The money raised is intended to finance the funerals of the victims and pay for any necessary adjustments in and around the homes of the injured girl and childminder. "At first we only wanted to support the costs of the funeral, but now we can do a lot more. We will discuss this with the families and the victims", Nietveld said. He opened an account with the municipality of Oss where the money will be deposited.
