Dutch man, 19, killed in accident on Malta

Tim Scholten, 19 from Noord-Brabant, passed away over the weekend after being hit by a car early on Friday morning. The accident happened on Sliema boulevard on Malta, AD reports.

At around 4:50 a.m. on Friday a motorist lost control of his car and drove onto the pavement on Sliema boulevard, where Tim was walking with three Dutch friends, two Brits and two Croatians. Tim was seriously hurt and had to be resuscitated by bystanders while emergency services responded.

The other three Dutch and the two Brits sustained minor injuries. The Croatian women were unharmed.

Tim was rushed to the hospital, where he later died of his injuries. He was holidaying on Malta and studied economics at the University of Tilburg, according to the newspaper. His parents decided to donate his organs.

Sources close to the investigation told Malta broadcaster TVM that the driver of the car, a 20-year-old from Malta, was under the influence at the time of the accident. A breathalyzer test done shortly after the accident showed that he was more than twice over the limit.
