Three killed in heavy storms; Several hurt

At least three people died during a massive storm that hit the Netherlands on Thursday. Three men were killed in separate accidents in Zwolle, Enschede, and Vuren, the local police departments report.

In Vuren a 66-year-old man died after falling through a plexiglass construction on a private industrial site on Industrieweg, the Lingewaal police said on Twitter. A 34-year-old man was seriously injured. The men fell several meters, according to the police. The Inspectorate for Social Affairs and Employment is investigating exactly what happened.

A 62-year-old man was killed when a tree fell onto his car on Goolkatenweg in Enschede. The incident happened around 11:45 p.m., according to the police.

Another 62-year-old man was killed in Zwolle when a thick branch fell on him, the Olst-Wijhe police reported. The man got out of his truck on Wesenberg, near Olst, to move a tree branch out of the road when he was hit by another falling branch.

Nine people, including eight children, were injured in a bus crash around 9:30 a.m. The driver was badly hurt, and had to be extricated by firefighters due to the heavy damage to the front section of the bus.

One driver was seriously injured when a tree crashed down upon his work vehicle. The incident happened in Veghel on Thursday morning. Firefighters used special equipment to free the man, who was trapped in the cabin, Omroep Brabant reported.

Terrifying video from Horst, Limburg, shows a tree nearly smash into a woman pushing a stroller. They luckily escaped with just a scare, and no injuries, De Limburger stated.

Later in the day, a Qbuzz bus running along the N366 was blown into a canal in the eastern part of Groningen. As the bus took on water, the driver and the few passengers on the vehicle escaped through a side window.

There were no injuries, only frightened people, in the accident.

Public works department Rijkswaterstaat warned people to stay off the roads due to dangerous driving conditions caused by the strong winds. Gusts of wind were so strong that Schiphol suspended all flights for a time, NS stopped trains and tram services in Amsterdam and Den Haag were halted.
