Code Red alert issued for Netherlands as winds peak at 140 km/h

Meteorological institute KNMI intensified its storm warning to code red for large parts of the Netherlands. Wind gusts can peak at 140 kilometer per hour locally, KNMI warns.

The code red warning applies to the provinces of Noord-Holland, Zuid-Holland, Utrecht, Flevoland, Overijssel, Gelderland, and the IJsselmeer area. A code orange warning is in effect for the rest of the country.

The code red areas can expect very strong winds of between 110 and 130 kilometers per hour, with gusts peaking at 140 kilometers per hour. The rest of the country will see winds between 100 and 120 kilometers per hour.

"Risk of falling trees and loose branches. Take measures to prevent damage or injury. Dangerous situations for traffic and water sports. Prepare for a trip and take longer travel times into account. Follow weather reports and warnings", the meteorological institute warns.
