Girl, 5, dies after icy road accident

A 5-year-old girl who was seriously injured in an accident on Sloewg Noord in Rhittem on Tuesday morning, passed away in hospital on Tuesday night, the police confirmed. Her 2-year-old brother was also killed in the accident.

Exactly what happened is not yet clear. The police believe that a car driving from Terneuzen towards Middelburg ended up on the wrong side of the road, possibly due to iciness on the roads after Monday's snow storms. The car collided head-on with another car, containing the two children and their mother.

The children's mother, 30, and the driver of the other car were both wounded, according to newspaper AD. They were taken to a hospital in Goes.

The police are investigating what happened. "The cause could have been iciness, but just as easily something else", police spokesperson Willem-Jan Uytdehage said to the newspaper.
