Child killed, three other hurt in icy road accident

A 2-year-old boy was killed and his 5-year-old sister was seriously injured in an accident on Sloeweg Noord in the Zeeland town of Ritthem on Tuesday morning. The boy died at the scene and the girl was rushed to hospital by trauma helicopter. Two adults were also injured, the Telegraaf reports.

Exactly what happened is not yet clear. The police believe that a car driving from Terneuzen towards Middelburg ended up on the wrong side of the road, possibly due to iciness on the roads after Monday's snow storms. The car collided head-on with another car, in which a woman and two children were. The children got trapped in the car.

A total of three cars were involved in this frontal collision. The road from Middelburg was closed for some time.

The police call on witnesses to come forward.
