Snow Day: Many Dutch schools closed on Monday
Due to heavy snowfall expected across the Netherlands this afternoon, many schools decided to give their students the day off on Monday. These include the 23 secondary schools under the ZAAM foundation in Amsterdam and its surrounds, the 4e Gymnasium in Amsterdam, the Amadeus Lyceum in Vleuten, the Coornhert Gymnasiam in Gouda, and the Wellant College in Alphen aan den Rijn, NU.nl reports.
"An email has just been sent from the board that at 1:00 p.m. te doors will close in all schools of ZAAM", an employee of the Amsterdam-Zuid school community said to NU.nl.
"Although we know that important lessons must be given this week and next, we find the weather forecast for Monday so serious that we want to put your safety first", the 4e Gymnasium said. "So we decided to give you, the students, a snow day on Monday."
The Amsterdams Lyceum is open as usual today. "If parents call and say that their child is not coming because of the weather, then there is nothing to worry about. But the children who live nearby can still come by public transit or by bike."
All these schools believe that they will be open as usual on Tuesday, according to the newspaper.
Between 5 and 10 centimeters of snow is expected to fall in the Netherlands on Monday. Meteorological institute KMNI issued a code orange weather warning. And Rijkswaterstaat advised people to work from home if possible today.
