DNA investigation launched to find parents of baby left in dumpster

The Public Prosecutor is taking the next step in the search for the parents oaf a newborn baby found in an underground dumpster in Amsterdam two years ago. The Netherlands Forensic Institute is launching a DNA-relationship investigation, AT5 reports. The newborn baby girl was found in an underground dumpster on Fritz Conijnstraat in Amsterdam Nieuw-West late October 2014. A passerby heard crying and alerted the authorities. The little girl was rescued in time. The baby was between 10 and 20 days old when she was found. The police believe she was born in a hospital because she had a so-called "heel prick". Despite two years of intensive investigation, the baby's parents are still a mystery. The Prosecutor asked public health service RIVM for assistance - hoping that DNA profiles could be compared to a selection of other heel prick cards - but the service refused to share this information. "The medical professional secrecy can only be broken at exceptions, in serious cases in which there is danger to, for example, mother or child. And that is not the case", a spokesperson said to AT5. So the Prosecutor asked the NFI to launch a DNA relationship investigation, in which the baby's DNA profile will be compared to DNA profiles in the criminal database in the hopes of discovering a biological relative. This investigation will take several months.
