Rush hour drivers warned of heavy rain, traffic jams

A very rainy start to the week is leading to a difficult rush hour on Monday morning. By 7:00 a.m. traffic information service VID already reported three long traffic jams on Dutch highways. There is a 17 kilometer traffic jam on the A2 towards Utrecht near Waardenburg. Cars area also piling up on the A6 towards Amsterdam and on the same highway near Lelystad towards Muiden. According to weather service Weeronline, the Netherlands can expect between 20 and 40 mm of rain in the next 36 hours. Some places may even get over 60 mm, which is equal to the normal average for all of May. The weather service warns traffic will be inconvenienced not only by the rain itself, but also by water on the road. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning for heavy rainfall for the southern half of the Netherlands. The warning is in effect until 5:00 p.m. on Monday. The KNMI advises residents to keep an eye on weather warnings. The rainy weather will stay all week, according to KNMI. Afternoon temperatures on Monday will be around 14 degrees, with a moderate to strong northwesterly wind.
