The opening of Lelystad Airport, intended to take over holiday flights from crowded Schiphol, has again been delayed, this time due to the coronavirus crisis. The planned opening at the end of this year is no longer feasible, Minister Cora van Nieuwenhuizen of Infrastructure said in a letter to parliament on Tuesday. The aim is now to open the airport in November 2021, she said, NU.nl reports.

Since the coronavirus pandemic began in late February, police have arrested at least ten different people for threatening police, bus drivers and supermarket staff with a coronavirus infection by spitting at them or coughing on them. The incidents are causing more concern among police officers, who have already modified their approach to criminal and domestic intervention because of the ongoing health crisis.

The police pulled over a drunk driver in Lelystad during the early hours of Thursday morning and found that she was four times over the alcohol limit with six young children in the car with her. "Her driver's license was of course confiscated immediately and she will soon have to answer to the judge," the Lelystad police said on Facebook.

The police arrested two men and raided four homes in Hengelo, Arnhem, Haarlem and Lelystad on Tuesday in an investigation into the possible continuation of banned pedophile association Martijn, the Public Prosecutor said in a statement.

A 75-year-old man was arrested in Haarlem on suspicion of possession of child pornography. A 32-year-old man was arrested in Hengelo for "preparatory acts for the abuse of children", the Prosecutor said.

A man was arrested for abducting his 11-year-old daughter from her primary school in Lelystad on Thursday afternoon, triggering an Amber Alert. The man does not have custody of the child, NOS reports.

The girl and her father were found in the center of Lelystad around 30 minutes after the Amber Alert was issued on Thursday. The girl was in good health, the police said.

The 11-year-old girl who was the subject of an Amber Alert was found within 30 minutes after the alert was issued, a spokesperson for the Amber Alert system told NL Times. The girl was found in her hometown of Lelystad because of the mass notification, the spokesperson said citing information released to her by the police.

"The missing girl has been found. Thank you all for sharing [the bulletin]," Lelystad police said on social media.

A large portion of Lelystad residents and businesses were either without water or had brown water flowing at low pressure from their taps on Tuesday morning, water utility Vitens confirmed. Parts of the city’s north side along the Zuigerplasdreef were also flooded amid the related water main break.

The incident was first reported at about 5:45 a.m. and repair work had begun by 7:15 a.m., the firm said. It was not immediately clear how many households were affected.​  Lelystad counts over 77 thousand residents.

Vitens expects the problem to be solved by 10:45 a.m.

After two years of haggling between The Hague and Brussels, the European Commission approved the regulation that makes it possible to distribute flights between Schiphol and Lelystad Airport, NOS reports based on a draft decision in its possession. The proposal was submitted to all European Union Member States, and they agreed to it unanimously, according to the broadcaster.

NS is running fewer intercity trains on Friday due to the heat. Prolonged exposure to the high temperatures means that trains need to be serviced more often, and that the maintenance takes longer to perform, a spokesperson for the Dutch rail company said to AD.

Minister Sander Dekker for Legal Protection called reports that psychiatric prisoners may be involved in the killing of a 72-year-old man in his Lelystad apartment "disturbing". 

The victim was found dead in his home on Sunday. The police believe he was killed somewhere during the weekend of April 19th to 21st. Two men aged 48 and 35 from Almere were arrested for involvement in his murder.

The police arrested a second suspect in connection with the death of a 72-year-old man in his Lelystad home. Like the first suspect arrested in this case, 35-year-old Michael B. was previously sentenced to institutionalized psychiatric treatment, the Telegraaf reports. 

72-year-old Gerrit Thomassen was found dead in his home on Rode Klif in Lelystad on Sunday. On Monday the police arrested 48-year-old Jan van K. on suspicion of involvement in Thomassen's death.

A 72-year-old man was found dead in his apartment on Rode Klif in Lelystad on Sunday, the police said in a statement on Tuesday evening. Investigators believe he was murdered. A 48-year-old man from Lelystad was arrested. The police call on witnesses to come forward.

Exactly when and how the elderly man died, is not yet clear. The 48-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of involvement in his death.

Two hand grenades found around the Grote Markt in Almere on Thursday were rendered harmless by explosives experts, police said. The popular district was evacuated at the start of the business day after the first grenade was found outside an ABN Amro bank branch on Koopmanstraat at about 8:30 a.m.

A second grenade was spotted just steps away from the bank, at the Saint-Tropez shisha lounge on the popular square. Emergency workers kept the area clear until 1:30 p.m., police said on Twitter.

NS will experiment with high speed intercity trains on the route between Amsterdam and Groningen next year. If the experiment succeeds, the high speed trains may be included in the 2021 timetable. "For example, twice an hour as a rush hour train", NS said, NOS reports.

The Dutch Safety Board is launching an investigation into the way in which patient safety was handled after MC Slotervaart in Amsterdam and the MC IJsselmeer hospitals in Lelystad and surroundings were declared bankrupt last week. The Safety Board wants to examine how the interests of the patients were weighed before and during the bankruptcy process, NU.nl reports.

The closure of the hospital in Lelystad would be unacceptable and could lead to life-threatening situations, the province of Flevoland and municipalities in the province said in their response to financial problems facing MC IJsselmeer hospitals. The hospital group applied for deferment of payment on Teusday.

The MC Slotervaart hospital in Amsterdam and the MC IJsselmeer hospitals in Lelystad and surroundings filed for deferment of payment. Health insurer Zilveren Kruis and most other health insurers stopped financing for the hospitals. "Bankruptcy may be inevitable", a spokesperson said, NU.nl reports.

The employees and patients of both hospitals will be informed of the current situation on Tuesday. Patient care is guaranteed. "This is a statutory task for health insurers. Patients currently treated in both hospitals can rely on adequate care", the spokesperson said to the newspaper.

A suspicious package found at the provincial house in Lelystad on Monday morning contained no explosives, the police announced after investigation by explosive experts. The police lifted the lockdown of the area around the provincial house. Banners with slogans about nature reserve Oostvaardersplassen were also found hung on the building. Commissioner of the King Leen Verbeek is shocked by the incident, he said to the Telegraaf.

A suspicious package was found at the provincial house on Visarenddreef in Lelystad on Monday morning. The police closed down the area around the building, including part of the nearby train station. Multiple banners with slogans about nature reserve Oostvaardersplassen were also found hanging on the provincial house, a spokesperson for the Midden Nederland police said to NU.nl.

The police are allowing pedestrians into the train station, but motorists are being stopped, according to Omroep Flevoland.

A man was found dead next to a high wall around the prison in Lelystad at around 6:00 a.m. on Thursday morning. There are no indications of a crime and it is believed the man became unwell and then died, the police said on Twitter.

There were attempts to resuscitate the man, but it was already too late, Het Parool reports. The man was already dead when he was found. According to the newspaper, the body was found on the fenced grounds of the prison on Larsedreef.

Amsterdam has the most to offer of all municipalities in the Netherlands when it comes to culture. Maastricht and Leeuwarden are in second and third place respectively, according to the new Atlas for Municipalities presented in Leeuwarden on Wednesday afternoon, Het Parool reports.

Among the provinces, Groningen has the biggest cultural offering, followed by Zeeland and Noord-Holland. Flevoland is last on the ranking.
