Dutch royals to celebrate King’s Day 2027 in Lelystad, first time in Flevoland
The Dutch royal family will celebrate King's Day 2027 in Lelystad, Flevoland, the Dutch Government Information Service announced Monday. The visit is scheduled for April 27.
The decision marks the first time King Willem-Alexander will celebrate his birthday in Flevoland. It is also the first time in about 20 years that the royal family will mark the monarch’s birthday in the province. The last visit to Flevoland for a royal birthday was in 2006, when then-Queen Beatrix visited Zeewolde and Almere.
Lelystad’s selection comes in a milestone year for the city, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary. The first residents moved there in 1967.
Koningsdag 2027 in Lelystad follows this year’s celebrations in Dokkum, where King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima, and Princess Ariane participated in public events, including ice skating. The annual royal quiz was also held there and was won by Princess Amalia.
In 2025, the festivities took place in Doetinchem. The upcoming event will be the 14th time Koningsdag has been celebrated under that name. For the 128 years prior, the national celebration was known as Koninginnedag or Prinsessedag.
The royal family has now visited nearly every Dutch province for the monarch’s birthday events. Following Lelystad, Zeeland remains the only province where King Willem-Alexander has not yet celebrated Koningsdag.
The king has previously marked the occasion in cities including De Rijp, Amstelveen, Rotterdam, Groningen, Maastricht, and Emmen.
Lelystad Mayor Mieke Baltus responded in a press statement, saying she is “very pleased” to welcome the royal family. She said: “This visit is a beautiful reward for the efforts of all our residents and entrepreneurs, who together make Lelystad a little more beautiful every day.”
The municipality said it will release more details in September about how Koningsdag 2027 will be organized and how the program will be structured.
