Driver killed in sudden hailstorm; A6 closed

One driver was killed in an accident when a hailstorm hit traffic on the A6 between Lelystad and Emmeloord on Thursday morning. There were collisions on both sides of the highway and the road is closed in both directions, according to traffic information service ANWB. At least ten cars were involved in the collisions. The hailstorm hit around 5:45 a.m., according to broadcaster NOS. "It was totally unexpected", one driver said to the broadcaster. "At one moment nothing was going on and then a few meters down the highway was suddenly white." According to traffic information service VID, the highway is expected to be closed until at least 9:00 a.m. The ANWB advises traffic to Amsterdam to detour via Zwolle and Amersfoort. The A31 was also hit by a hailstorm around 6:15 a.m., according to the VID. There too the roads are very slick. The police Fryslan reports that several cars skid off the road due to the slickness. One of the cars ended up on its roof. Those inside managed to get out. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning fro slick roads for the provinces Overijssel, Friesland, Gelderland, the Wadden area and the IJsselmeer area. The warning is in effect until 10:00 a.m.
