Police instructor shot in training exercise gone awry

A police training course went terribly wrong on Thursday afternoon when a police instructor was shot during an exercise in Elst, Gelderland. The teacher was transported to an area hospital and is in stable condition, a police report stated. The incident, which authorities are calling an accident, took place at about 12:30 p.m. Police did not comment on the cause of the shooting. The Inspectorate SZW, which examines workplace injuries and deaths, is handling the investigation, a police spokesman later told De Gelderlander. Officials will interview the shooter and witnesses during their review, which could take up to four months. If the investigation uncovers evidence of a possible crime, then the police will conduct its own criminal investigation. Police would not release further details about either the victim or the person who fired the gun.
