Delft terrorism suspect acquitted on appeal

Terrorism suspect Mohamed A. was acquitted of preparing for terrorist offenses and financing terrorism by the court in The Hague on Wednesday. According to the court, there is not enough evidence to prove these facts, ANP reports. In June last year the court in Rotterdam convicted 23 year old A. and sentenced him to four years in prison. The Rotterdam court found him guilty of wanting to support the jihad in Syria with proceeds from a planned robbery. The court in The Hague did find the Delft man guilty of preparing and planning a robbery and illegal possession of weapons. He was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison, 10 of which conditionally suspended. But according to the court, the Public Prosecutor failed to prove that A. wanted to use the spoils of this robbery for terrorist purposes. A. was arrested on his way to commit an armed robbery in the Scheveningen harbor. The police found three firearms and ammunition in the car. According to the prosecutor, the robbery was prevented because A. told undercover police officers about the firearms.
