Panic in McDonald's: couple sneaks off to bathroom drawing warning shots, arrest

A man and a woman were arrested at a McDonald's restaurant in Zaandam on Wednesday afternoon for suspicious behavior in the bathroom, the police announced. Several warning shots were fired during the arrests. Staff members called the police around 2:30 p.m. after noticing the two sneaking off into the bathroom and finding it suspicious. The restaurant was evacuated and armed officers stood ready and waiting. The man was arrested when he came out of the bathroom. The woman came out moments later, but refused to follow police instructions. She was arrested after officers fired several warning shots. The fast food restaurant was searched, but no other suspects or anything else suspicious was found. Shortly after 5:00 p.m. the police released the restaurant and the evacuated customers could return to retrieve their belongings. The McDonald's is located on a busy roundabout that forms access to Zaandam from the A7. The police action caused many traffic problems. The suspects, a 29 year old man and a 37 year old woman both from Zaandam, are in custody for further investigation.
