Amsterdam Eye only cinema with Tarantino's Hateful Eight in 70mm

Film lovers in the Benelux region will have to travel to Amsterdam Noord if they want the chance to watch Quentin Tarantino’s latest film, The Hateful Eight, on 70mm film. The EYE film institute is the only theater in the area expected to screen the American director’s movie in that format, according to distributor Entertainment One. Tarantino shot the western specifically on that size film, called Ultra Panavision, even though movies are much more often shot and distributed digitally. “It is very unusual that The Hateful Eight is filmed in 70mm, a format that is no longer used,” the distributor said last week. “Eye is one of the few cinemas to still have a functioning 70mm projector.” Across the Netherlands the western will be shown digitally. But at the Amsterdam institute, they even had to purchase a set of specific lenses to show the movie as Tarantino intended it to be screened. Tickets for the 70mm version of the film went on sale on Friday, nearly crashing the Eye’s website multiple times. Regular ticket price is 15 euro, 2.50 more than the digital screening, with several different discounts available. The movie will stay at the Eye at least through February 3. It stars Samuel L. Jackson, who has appeared in multiple Tarantino films, and Kurt Russell, who starred in Deathproof, with Jennifer Jason Leigh and Bruce Dern. Reservoir Dogs stars Tim Roth and Michael Madsen are also in the movie. It tells the story of John “The Hangman” Ruth (Russell), tasked with bringing in murder suspect Daisy “The Prisoner” Domergue (Leigh) on a murder charge. It is about seven bounty hunters in total along with The Prisoner, all stuck in a snow storm in post-Civil War Wyoming.
