Police shoot man in leg after knife threats

The police shot a 30 year old man in the leg in Breda on Monday afternoon after the man threatened them with a knife and then fled. The incident happened around 5:30 p.m. on Katerdonk, close to shopping center De Donk. The police received a report of domestic violence, saying that the 30 year old man was beating his girlfriend. When officers arrived at the home, the man reacted aggressively and threatened the police with a knife. The officers tried to get him under control with pepper spray, but failed. The man fled from the home. Bystanders told Omroep Brabant that he did so by jumping off the balcony. The police followed, and after a short chase, shot the suspect in the leg. The man was taken to the hospital for treatment and then taken into custody. The Rijskrecherche, the State Investigation Department that investigates internal matters, is looking into the incident as is the usual practice when the police fire shots. According to Omroep Brabant, the police closed off the area where the shooting happened, including part of Hondsdonk and Veerdonk. A number of residents were unable to enter or leave their homes.
