Those in the Netherlands in life threatening danger should immediately dial 112 for emergencies, and anyone suffering from depression or contemplating suicide can call 113 Zelfmoordpreventie at any time by dialing either 113 or 0800-0113, or by visiting 113.nl.
The 35-year-old man arrested for killing a woman in her home in Vlijmen on Thursday night was the victim’s boyfriend, the police confirmed on Friday. “He is suspected of causing the woman’s fatal injuries,” the police said. The 38-year-old woman’s 3-year-old child was at home when the man killed her.
Neighbors called the police to the woman’s home on Parklaan at around 10:30 p.m. They heard screams from inside the home, followed by a deafening silence.
Responding officers found the woman gravely injured and called in a trauma team by helicopter. Several ambulances also responded. The woman was rushed to a hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
The woman’s 3-year-old was home during the violence. A neighbor took the child in, Omroep Brabant reported. According to neighbors, the woman had two young children from a previous relationship. Where the other child is is unclear.
Another neighbor told the broadcaster that the woman had also experienced domestic violence in a previous relationship.
The Vlijmen woman is the second woman killed by a partner or ex in the Netherlands this week. On Tuesday, an Eindhoven man gunned down his ex-wife on a street in Gouda, in front of their two children. The woman and children were in hiding from the man and were living in a women’s shelter in Gouda. It is unclear how he tracked them down. He later committed suicide.
A woman is killed in the Netherlands every eight days. In about 60 percent of the cases, the perpetrator was her partner or ex.
