Zaans Museum’s €1.2m Monet is its most expensive work

With reporting by Zack Newmark. The Zaans Museum purchased a work by French painter Claude Monet for 1.16 million euros, making it the most expensive purchase in the history of the museum. Titled, "Voorzaan and Westerhem," Monet painted the piece when he stayed in the city in 1871. The French painter came to Zaandam in 1871, where he stayed for about four months. He was accompanied by his wife and child in the city, whose landscapes inspired 25 of his artworks. Purchasing the piece made the Zaans Museum one of three museums in the country to possess a Monet work featuring Zaandam. The others hang in Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum and the Kröller-Muller Museum in Otterlo, Gelderland.
