Explosives find clears Groningen neighborhood

The discovery of an explosive in a flat on Paramaribostraat in Groningen led to 16 homes being evacuated on Sunday night. The explosive was discovered after local residents called the police and reported seeing a man walking the streets with an air rifle. Police officers found the man and arrested him. The police then searched the suspect's home and found the explosive. The police immediately vacated the apartment and called in the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, which advised that the other apartments in the building be evacuated. A total of 16 residents were taken from their homes and were given shelter in the police station on Rademarkt. The EOD team removed the explosive from the apartment. It turned out to be a projectile that had already been made unusable. The suspect, a 38 year old man, also told the police that he collects objects from World War II. The EOD team and an explosive-dog searched the rest of the apartment for any more explosives, but did not find anything. The evacuated residents were allowed to return to their homes.
