Freelancers not saving enough for retirement, study shows

More than half (57 percent) of Dutch freelancers expect that they will have to continue working after retirement. This is according to a study done by Centraal Beheer under 539 freelancers. According to the study, 21 percent of freelancers assume that their monthly retirement income will not be enough. 41 percent are not putting money aside for retirement. Almost half of respondents are unsure whether they will have enough money at their disposal at retirement. Self-employed men put more money aside and more often than their female counterparts. Almost half (48 percent) of freelancing men are currently building a pension, compared with only 35 percent of women. "Independent entrepreneurs do not have access to the amenities of a pension from an employer. As a result they often do not put enough aside for their retirement. Getting your income in order, now and in the future, is therefore extra important for the growing number of self-employed workers in our country," said Sylvia Matser, senior market manager at Centraal Beheer.
