Sam Mendes taps Dutch cinematographer for new Bond film

As actor Daniel Craig returns to the role of secret agent 007, director Sam Mendes has tapped Dutchman Hoyte van Hoytema to be the next cinematographer of the 24th installment of the James Bond series. The BAFTA-nominated Hoytema has in recent years built a name for himself in Hollywood, showcasing his work on films like The Fighter, Let The Right One In and Her. Previous cinematographer Roger Deakins exited the Bond franchise after winning the American Society of Cinematographer's (ASC) prize for Skyfall two years ago, leaving the door open for fresh talent. While he has big boots to fill, many expect van Hoytema to live up to the challenge. “Van Hoytema is easily one of the most exciting DPs in the game today, so bravo,” writes HitFix's Kristopher Tapley. “He remains without an Oscar nod but BAFTA and ASC gave him some 'Tinker Tailor' love,” referring to awards van Hoytema won for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Sam Mendes will return to the role of director alongside Daniel Craig as Bond, Ralph Finnes as M, Maomie Harris as Moneypenny, and Ben Wishaw as Q. The latest Bond instalment is set to be released on 23 October 2015.
